Under the hard exterior, teeth have soft tissues that can become infected. When this happens, it can be an uncomfortable experience and the infection can spread. Endodontics, or root canal treatment, involves taking out the soft tissues and leaving the tooth free of pain and infection. As we have the expertise in-house, you will have your treatment in the same safe, familiar space.

What is endodontics?

Endodontics, also known as root canal treatment, is a very precise area of dentistry that involves entering the tooth and removing the soft tissues from the delicate internal structure. This treatment is essential in saving a tooth from being lost and also stops the infection before it can spread.

The pulp, the soft tissues inside the tooth, can become infected if the tooth is breached through decay, a deep filling or trauma. Symptoms can include pain, increased sensitivity to temperature, discolouration, a metallic taste, gum tenderness or swelling.

Why have root canal treatment?

  • Can save an infected tooth from extraction
  • Removes a source of infection that could spread to other areas
  • Prevents further problems that could be caused by losing a tooth
  • Can relieve toothache
  • Less expensive than replacing a lost tooth

Is the treatment painful?

No. Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation for being uncomfortable but it simply isn’t the case. We always use local anaesthetic to reduce any discomfort. Having the treatment is no different than having a tooth filled and many patients who benefit from our endodontic treatment express surprise at how pain-free and easy the treatment is.

Looking after your treated tooth

If looked after properly, with regular brushing and flossing, your root canal treated tooth should stay trouble-free and provide a long-lasting repair. Even though the pulp has been removed, the tooth will stay intact because the canals have been sealed to prevent re-infection. Regular check-ups are also recommended so any problems can be detected early.
