Did you know?
5 surprising facts about gum disease
  • Gum disease is extremely common. A frequent misconception is that gum disease only affects the elderly.
  • Gum disease is contagious.
  • Gum disease has been linked to serious health conditions.
  • Chronic bad breath may be a symptom of gum disease.
  • Gum disease can be hereditary.

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the supporting structures of the teeth. It’s mainly concerned with preventing the progress of gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can not only cause the recession of gum tissue but cause bone density to degrade over time. Periodontics can involve surgical correction of uneven or receding gums, and the placement of dental implants and their maintenance.

Treating and preventing gum disease at West End Dental

Working together, we can stop gum disease from ever being an issue. Flossing and using interdental brushes, on top of brushing twice a day, will keep your mouth clear of plaque.

However, some spots are hard to reach with home cleaning alone. Visits to the hygienist will ensure that your teeth and gums are bacteria-free. These routine visits to the hygienist are essential to your periodontal health. Hygienists are trained in spotting, assessing and treating gum disease.

If gum disease is left untreated, it can progress to a more troublesome stage – periodontitis. This is where the immune system overreacts and causes gum tissue to recede. At this stage, more extensive cleaning and maintenance is needed to keep on top of the condition. While periodontitis is treatable, it is a life-long condition.

Before and After

Symptoms of gum disease

Although not always obvious, symptoms of gum disease can include:
  • Bleeding when you brush
  • Swollen, red gums
  • Bad breath or a metallic taste
  • Gum recession
  • Sensitive teeth

Regular screening of teeth and gums can ensure any issues are swiftly spotted, helping to slow or halt the disease.

How can we treat gum disease?

The level of treatment required for gum disease depends on the case, but it will include plaque control and demonstrating the most effective techniques for keeping teeth clean.

If gum disease has developed beyond the early stages, a thorough clean under the gums, known as root planing, will be required to remove hidden bacterial build-up. This involves scaling of the root surface, which can reduce inflammation of the gum tissue. Surgical procedures can also be used to address deep gum pockets.
